When the traffic signal turned yellow i was about reach the other end of the road,Traffic police stopped me and demanded for Rs 200.I explained him that when i crossed the signal it was GREEN then he started demanding me Rs 500.I paid the amount he demanded first i.e. 200
I applied for my passport and saw for the first time how police asks for bribe shamelessly and that too with a proud face. The policeman at the Phoolpur thaana who handles the verification for passport asked for Rs. 700 to write that I don't have any criminal record. And I told its too much, the reply was " Yeh tho standard rate hai, isse kam mein kuch nahi hoga. Adha tho saheb (Thanna incharge) hi le lenge". First time felt helpless and paid the bribe as I needed my passport. It's a pity that we have to pay bribe to get our identity.
I am a NRI and have been travelling frequently to India for visits for the past 50 years.Once as a student in 1966 ,Mumbai customs will not let me take my camera with me. They asked for money under table or leave my camera with them.I left my camera with them rather than pay a bribe.
On leaving ,they would not give my camera back. Luckily I had a friend living in Mumbai and I told him about my camera. He followed with the customs for a year and got the camera from them.
My wife and my daughter were asked for bribe when visiting India in 2005 in Mumbai by customs. My wife refused to pay so the customs harassed her and threatened her. They made them wait. Eventually they made her open her bags ,and except for her personal clothes there was nothing. My wife asked for a manager of customs. The manager also told her she should have paid
Recently 2009 we travelled again. The customs officers were young and they made us welcome without asking for a bribe. Way to go India. Get rid of old corrupt burecrats and politicians and get rid of corruption in Country.
We ,outside India have known about bribe in India for years. How come India does not know about the *******
Since I need a Criminal record document to submit in Switzerland on entry as a part of work permit process, I had to approach the local police station to get this. I was told since this is election time, this is not possible unless I give 'something' to get it.
Ultimately what I got is a simple word document of the letter signed by the inspector, where the seal has the city name as 'Madras' instead of 'Chennai' without a letterhead or even the logo of the Tamil Nadu Police.
Even if you pay bribe you don't get what you ask for.

in the registration dept., we have to pass a test which is conducted there online, we dont know the signals and their meaning, we dont find a way to do so, not even when u search online, the office dont provide anything so to find out, finally we are forced to give bribe to the assistant through a broker to get passed in the test.
i need the system to be changed...

Although not asked directly but money was taken though different money to prepare affidavit only from the person known to the govt official and charged the amount for that.
Like most of the other respected citizens, I had all the requisite papers, I maintained decency of reach the police station on exact time, still I was asked to pay the "fees". When I asked how much would that be? ... I was told give whateever you wish. I took out Rs 200 to which the inspector replied promplty "you see, two constables visited you on a vehcile, plus ********** (the lady constable) filled your papers, plus we are accepting bank statements and not asking for landline bill" .... This actuall happened, verbatim.
There is alwaysa long queue at the VT registration office. where the documents for houses taken on rent are registered. Although the syatem can be improved, but the office operates in a manner that the window closes early and the brokers around keep hunting for bribes to give to officals to acquire token numbers
