Fancy someone examining the contents of your luggage right in front of your eyes and walking away with something expensive you purchased after much bargaining. Imagine how your blood must boil if this behaviour is accompanied with some arrogance too. Ironically, this daylight robbery is being carried out on a regular basis by the police and to some extent, by custom officials, all over the country. In a recent complaint registered by one of our visitors about an incident that happened nearly two decades ago (http://ipaidabribe.com/bribe-central/harassment-visitors-city-1994) the person from Bombay happened to visit Surat when the plague epidemic was at its peak. A cop stopped the auto he was travelling in and boarded it. After informing the Bombayite that he needed to be taken to a medical centre to examine the possibility of him carrying the plague virus from his City, the cop opened the visitor’s suitcase and removed one pair of new shoes. He then disembarked from the auto and allowed the visitor to proceed undisturbed.  In other instances, respondents have informed how customs officials at international airports in India remove foreign liquor, perfumes, pairs of sunglasses or cameras from suitcases during checking. What makes most of these individuals doubly vulnerable is the fact they are new to a City or country and are in a hurry to get through the airport formalities.
