BJP dubs Adarsh Building as a monument of 'Political Corruption'
Mumbai: Bhartiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya today described the Adarsh Housing Society as a monument of political corruption that should be demolished immediately.
Welcoming the Bombay High Court's order to demolish the 31-storey building in Mumbai's upscale Colaba area, Somaiya said, "I am very happy. Since day one, I have been fighting against the Adarsh game. It should be demolished because Adarsh was nothing but a monument of political corruption in Maharashtra."
"The CBI special court which is hearing criminal proceedings against Ashok Chavan (former chief minister), should take note of the order of the Bombay High Court and expedite the hearing against Ashok Chavan," he said.
In a major setback to the residents of the Adarsh Housing Society in Mumbai, the Bombay High Court on Friday ordered its demolition. The court has also ordered inquiry against the politicians, ministers and officers involved in the Adarsh Housing Society scam.
The court has given 12 weeks time to the Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra Government to appeal in the Supreme Court against its order.
The society, originally meant to be a six-storey structure to house Kargil war heroes and war widows, was converted into a 31-storey building in Mumbai's upscale Colaba area.
Ashok Chavan said he did not want to react to the judgement.
Chavan was forced to quit office after reports surfaced that some of his relatives owned flats in the Adarsh Housing Society.
Apart from Chavan, former senior bureaucrats such as Ramanand Tiwari and Subhash K Lalla face the possibility of losing their flats.
The 31-storey Adarsh Housing Society, originally meant for Kargil war heroes, landed in controversy after media reports said that several politicians, bureaucrats and defence personnel owned flats there.
