CBI raids Viswa Bharati campus over corruption charges against former VC

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday conducted raids at five premises including the famous Viswa Bharati University at Santiniketan over alleged corruption charges against sacked Vice-Chancellor Sushanta Duttagupta.

The raids were carried out at five locations including Duttagupta's office in the University campus at Birbhum and his finance office in Kolkata.

The raids started early on Tuesday morning after the Central agency registered a case against the former Vice-Chancellor on a reference that they received from the Central government.

APPOINTING UNDER-QUALIFIED TEACHERS?

Cases have also been registered against the then Registrar Dr. D Ganashekharan, Finance officer Dr. A.P Trivedi and the Deputy Registrar Shyamla Ray Nair. The FIR stated that Duttagupta, along with other accused officials had appointed Mrs. Shyamla Ray Nair by flouting UGC guidelines.

Nair, according to the complaint, did not meet the educational criteria for the post and was also older than the maximum age limit by at least 7 years.  

Dattagupta who was found guilty of financial and administrative irregularities, 
had resigned last year in October and was sacked by President Pranab Mukherjee in February this year.

An HRD probe team had also found him guilty of misconduct, negligence of duty and misappropriation of funds.
