New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Tuesday said it has initiated an internal investigation into allegations that some of its officials were bribed by a US-based construction firm between 2011 and 2015.

"NHAI has initiated an internal investigation into alleged payment of bribe money to its officials as reported in the media," said the statement.

Earlier, it was reported that a Boston-based construction firm allegedly paid $1.18 million bribe to officials of the NHAI from 2011 to 2015.

The firm M/S CDM Smith Inc. has been working in the road sector in India for quite some time.

"However, they were debarred for a period of three months from participating in future bidding of NHAI projects because of deficiency in services in one of the projects Dholpur-Morena section of NH-3," said the statement from NHAI.
