I became a proud father on 17th of Oct 2007 and per the formality I had to procure my son's birth certificate which needs to be issued by Registrar office located in Rammurthy Nagar in Bangalore. Its been 2 1/2 years since that day and I can still not forget my interaction with the staff in that office. I went in and was suggested to fill up a form and come back after 2 days to collect the certificate. After two days I visited the office again and was glad to know that the certificate was ready to be handed over, just then, I was asked to get inside the office where 4 people were seated. The person I was introduced to was flipping though my certificates and was acting busy, then he comments, "congratulations, you got a boy child and still you did not get any sweet for us" (as if I am one of his relative). Then he blatantly demanded Rs 500 if I wanted to get my certificates. This was my frist instance where I paid bribe and was very uncomfortable since I dont get paid like that. I have to work night shift and take calls to get my salary (and ofcouse no tipping). I felt like notifying this to the corruption burea but then heard similar instaces from my friends. So thought of dropping it thinking what goes round comes round.
