Driving without Helmet. Mobile Court or fine

Reported on June 25, 2016 from Chennai , Tamil Nadu  ι Report #108853

I was stopped by a police officer today Opposite Ashok Nagar Udhayam theater around 11:00 AM for not wearing my helmet. He asked me to show my vehicle documents and license which i gave it to him, Seeing that I produced all the documents he said since i did not wear helmet i need to pay fine of Rs.300. He also asked me to produce original of my license since I only had a duplicate copy of it.I said earlier once I had been fined Rs.100 with Challan produced through an electronic machine for forgeting my document at home so why is it Rs300 now.For this he replied if you had a helmet on you it would have been a 100 Rs fine since I did not carry one it is a 200 Rs.He asked me where I stayed and when i told him it was another locality nearby he asked me to produce my original and then go. When I said I would need the bike to go and get the original from my house. He asked me to leverage my phone and collect it after giving him my mobile. While I took out my phone he said that once I give him the original, he would submit the original in mobile court where I would have to pay Rs.100 as fine and collect my license back. The alternative being to pay fine of Rs 200 as spot. I asked him where the mobile court is , for which he replied he will let me know about it and added that I would be asked to come to his police station someday and i would be taken to mobile court from there. Since mobile court option would cause me a day's attendance . I said I would pay him the fine. He then took me and couple of others behind the Police Jeep in which his senior officer was sitting and took the money from me and told me not to go in a certain direction as there are more police there. It was only then I realised this was not a fine but a bribe and I was disturbed. I felt very uncomfortable and feel very ashamed about it . I did not get the Police officer's name but I believe the Police Vehicle number is TN22 G 0410 which I made a point to note down on my way back that route around 12:30PM.
