License confiscated for using mobile phone while driving

Reported on August 21, 2015 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #64882

I type this report as I wait to receive my license at Dadar traffic court. I was booked for using my mobile phone while driving at Parel intersection. The traffic cop confiscated my license and told me to report to the traffic court in three weeks. He also explained the procedure which included paying of fine and suspension of license.

The day I went to court, even before I entered an advocate came up to me asking for the challan. I didn't converse with him, instead went straight in to the office. However he came in and had a look at my challan and like the traffic cop, explained the entire procedure to obtain my license from attending court, pleading guilty, suspension of license and other 'formalities' and costs (I don't know how much of this is true).

As much as I wanted to do the right thing, I realized I wouldn't be able to fight a system that is already corrupt. Instead, it would only make matters worse for me and after connecting the dots I realized that the system was set up right from the traffic cop booking me to receiving my license.

I'm not proud of giving in to the system, but as I stand here I see how much of a business this is and it's sad that even if someone wants to do what us right, there isn't much help or support in sight. Needless to say, I am guilty.

I've just received my license for a 'fee' of INR 1500/-. The 'process' took a little over half an hour.
The Advocate went by the name Mande. I should have been a little wiser by noting the name of the traffic cop who booked me.
