Will another fast change the govt's stand on the Lokpal Bill?

Posted on June 17, 2011

In the wake of strong differences with the civil society, the government today ruled out sending two drafts of Lokpal Bill to the Union Cabinet. But, Mr Veerappa Moily contradicted civil society representative Arvind Kejriwal's statement yesterday that two separate drafts -- one prepared by the Government representatives and the other by civil society members -- would be sent to the Cabinet.

The government, he insisted, is in favour of finalising the draft bill by June 30 and introduce it in the Monsoon session of Parliament. However, with the government being non-committal on contentious issues such as inclusion of the Prime Minister and higher judiciary within the ambit of the proposed Lokpal, Anna Hazare has threatened agitation and will return to the streets to fight for the Lokpal Bill.

Will Anna Hazare’s announcement of starting another fast from August 15 bring about any difference in the government’s stand? Share your views with us here. Read more
