Freedom fighter Goura Chandra Mohapatra passes away at 104

Bhubaneswar, Sep 11 (IANS) Eminent freedom fighter Goura Chandra Mohapatra passed away in Odisha's Bhadrak on Tuesday. He was 104.

Mohapatra breathed his last at Bhadrak district hospital, family sources said.

He is survived by wife Mira Devi, nine sons and four daughters.

Goura Chandra Mohapatra was son of nationalist poet Kanta Kabi Laxmikant Mohapatra.

During the freedom struggle, he was the youngest prisoner lodged in Berhampur Circle Jail in 1942.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled the death of the veteran freedom fighter.

"As a true Gandhian, he dedicated his entire life for promotion of Gandhian values and dedicated himself for social upliftment. In his death, we lost one of the last pillars of freedom movement," said the Chief Minister.

He also conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also expressed grief over the demise of the freedom fighter.

Odisha Health Minister Pratap Jena condoled the death of the freedom fighter and said he was not only a literary person and educationist but also a social reformer and organisational man.
