Customs official asked me to buy duty free liquor using my passport

Reported on February 16, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #32544

I was entering Mumbai after a 24 hour international journey. My luggage had been delayed and I was entering the city tired, frustrated and without my luggage after 2 yrs of spending time abroad. At the Customs desk I had nothing to declare. However, the customs official (who first chatted in a very friendly way with me) asked me to go to the duty free liquor store and get 2 bottles of liquor (he said it was to please his bosses). he said i just had to show my passport and he'll send someone with the money to buy liquor.

i politely declined. although he allowed us to pass, he was visibly angry and shortly, he exploded at the airlines fellow accompanying us.

for someone stepping foot on the Indian soil after 2 long years, this was a really bad, distasteful experience making me think harder about coming back to India for settling my life.
