I couldn't pay a bribe

Reported on September 30, 2010 from Chennai , Tamil Nadu  ι Report #32665

I had missed taking the entrance to my destination and was trying to reverse in peak traffic and realized it was futile and possible harmful to those coming from behind. I decided to park my vehicle in the side of the road away from traffic.

I came back in 10 minutes to find that my wheels had been locked out by the traffic police. After calling them up and waiting for nearly 45 minutes they finally arrived and told I had parked in a "No Parking" zone and showed a sign-board quite some distance away. I regretted my mistake outright.

I was told that that I can either pay the usual fine of 300 rupees or a "fine" of 150 bucks without receipt. I realized it was "month end" too.

But I was unfazed and decided to argue my point. I told them that what I had done was unintentional and had I seen the board I would never have parked my vehicle there. I explained my park time was hardly 15 minutes but again admitted that I should have been more careful. I knew I did not have a strong case but stood my ground.

Seeing that I had parked my vehicle well away from the traffic (and possibly giving my other arguments a thought) the cop finally relented and gave me a receipt and guess what I paid only 150 :). Probably not so fruitless argument after all!
