When I had applied for a fresh passport in 1995 -- my previous passport was issued from Ahmedabad and had expired -- I did not pay a bribe to the police constable who came to my residence for verification. The end result was that he gave a negative report and my passport was issued for only one year and I had to go through the whole cumbersome process again in 1996. I was born and brought up in New Delhi and living in the present address since 1960 except for the period when my job took me to Gujarat.
Is it any surprise that I am scared of the "mai-baap" sarkar!
