Refused disguised bribe of Rs. 1000 demanded for electricity meter replacement
On a Saturday morning a man claiming to be from the EUDD - II Noida with office located at Sector 41 Noida came to my home and told me that the old mechanical electricity meters are being replaced by the new electronic ones with a charge of Rs. 1000. I asked for his identification and did get the ICard. But when I asked if I will get a receipt for the Rs. 1000 the man refused and said that you can get the same from office after meter has been replaced. I found this suspicious and immediately called up RWA Sector 41 office and they told me to refuse paying anything as the change of meter is being done for free. At that point I refused to pay up but the man continued threatening me that my meter is tampered with and you will be fined, he pretended to talk to his senior to visit my place and seal the meter. When I did not relent at all, he said "Ok, I will come again later with my senior" and went away.
So lesson is that you have to keep yourself informed and confront officials although I know that is not always possible.
