Passport verification bribe by Police.

Reported on August 21, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #30989

I applied for a renewed (reissued) passport at the new passport seva kendra and received one shortly enough, without paying any bribe. After a month or so, I received a call from the HSR layout police station asking me to visit the police station. I did so and was asked to come again with photocopies. At the second visit I was asked to pay police verification charges. I asked a 'good cop' how much I should pay and was informed that Rs 200 would be enough. I paid the amount and left after someone signed my papers. It felt very cheap to be asked for a bribe by policemen. That too for doing their job and from an upright citizen, who identified himself as a project manager at a leading multinational IT firm. Sure, I could've refused to pay or made an issue out of it. I just don't have the time to run behind all this (as would be true about everyone else who ends up paying a bribe, even when they've done nothing wrong). So if the force that is to protect us from criminals is corrupt in even such a petty way, who do we count on to keep us safe?

What's your reaction?
