I landed in India with a damaged passport and a valid Emergency Certificate to prove the same. I had an original Birth Certificate and Driving License, and photocopies of PAN Card, Aadhar card among others. The Immigrations officer made up a lie that I need the originals. I was asked to slip in 100 pounds and they sent away others from the desk where we were standing to make it easier to accept the bribe. I said I don't have it. They came down to 50 Euros. Further. 25 Euros. I showed my wallet, it had only 15 Euros in cash. They accepted that and signed the document slip. I need that slip to apply for a new passport. I wish I had the guts to fight it out. I know the counter number where the person who took the bribe was working on 31st January 2013 at 12am when this happened.
Frustrating to know that the European authorities were very helpful and made things easier and people from my own country made it such a pain for me to come back home.
