Visiting Musician Bribe

I arrived at Mumbai Airport carrying a double bass in a flight case (quite conspicuous at 7 feet tall) I was singled out in the main concourse of arrivals (not the customs area) by a customs official and told that I would not be able to take the bass from the airport, but that it would be kept safe for me. It was clear that he wanted money or the bass, when I opened my wallet in front of his eyes in plain view he was clearly flustered and hurriedly gestured towards a nearby armed police officer and said I was to pay him, discreetly. Not wishing to risk being parted with the instrument, but very much against against my principles I paid the officer $50 and duly left the airport otherwise unscathed. It was my first visit to India, I have since developed a ********** affection for the country having had several visits, but as an initial experience it was extremely off putting and saddening.
