'Cops shed their corrupt image'

New Delhi: The vigilance department of Delhi Police conducted 55% more inquiries against its men after which disciplinary action was taken against rogue cops. The department also conducted an independent survey on corruption during which 34% respondents found Delhi Police personnel to be corrupt in 2015 as against 66% in 2014.

The department registered 88 cases under Prevention of Corruption Act against 77 policemen. Of the 490 cops suspended, 10 were inspectors, 90 sub-inspectors, 46 ASIs and the rest constables and home guards. Departmental inquiries were ordered against 1,017 officers and 90 policemen were dismissed from service following complaints.

Vigilance inquiries were conducted against 838 policemen out of which charges were proved against one ACP, 12 inspectors, 18 sub-inspectors, two ASIs, five head-constables and 15 constables. The department received 1,09,963 complaints on its anti-corruption helpline number 9910641064.

Action was also taken against cops found involved in promoting illegal constructions or asking for money to demolish them.

A 24X7 flying squad was also formed to attend to complaints regarding corruption. The team led by an ACP attended 1,488 calls in 2015, which included calls pertained to allegations of harassment, inaction or corruption.

The vigilance department also received 479 grievances from the LG's public grievance cell out of which 392 were redressed. Police commissioner B S Bassi got 14,626 emails regarding corruption within the force.
