Bribe at customs for carrying personal camera

Reported on June 6, 2011 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #31988

This happened to a friend of mine in 2009. He lives and works in the UK. He was travelling to India on a holiday to visit family. He was carrying his personal camera (only one). He was asked to pay duty for this. He refused saying it was for his personal use and would be returning with it in 3 weeks when he returned to the UK. He even showed several photos on the camera to prove that he had been using it already. They refused. He was aksed to surrender the camera and pick it up on his way back!! He was attending his brothers wedding and this seemed absurd. My friend tells them that if they can give it to him in writing that his camera would be undamaged and in the same condition , then he would happily do so. They backed off and after making him wait for an hour let him go.
