Yay! I got a learner's license in an hour's time!
Objective: To get a driving license.
Options:
1. Pay Rs. 2500 and get a license sitting at home, without appearing for an exam or even physically going to the transport authority.
2. Pay Rs 150 and appear for two exams (one for learners and for the permanent driving license) and get a learning license the same day and a permanent in a month’s time.
Dilemma: I don’t want to waste my time, sitting in a dingy transport authority office when I can get something done sitting at home for a cost.
Choice: Thanks to a friend, who encouraged me to get over my hesitation, trust that the process wouldn’t be as cumbersome and give it a shot; I went to get my learner's this morning and got it in an hour’s time. Super kicked about that!
Reflection: Even though I am not a fan of technocratic solutions to developmental problems, in this case it has worked. The entire test is now computerized with little or no scope for the authorities to fail someone who has come without paying a bribe.
Conclusion: For all of you, who have little trust in the system, give it a shot and it may just work you.
