Bribe for International Drivers Permit (IDP)

I was asked a Rs. 500 "gift money" to the officer processing my IDP in addition to the regular Rs. 500 fee, so that it could be delivered to me on the same day. Since I was leaving for the US a week later, I was not willing to risk issuance by challenging him and fighting it out. So I paid it and got it. Same thing happened for my wife who joined me a month later. She was initially asked Rs. 1000 as bribe quoting that her licence was new. Later when she told that I had got it for Rs. 500, they reduced hers and took Rs. 500 to get the work done.
