To get my car back after an accident

Reported on March 7, 2011 from Kochi , Kerala  ι Report #27433

I paid a bribe of Rs 500 to get an FIR registered and get my car back from police custody after an accident. My car accidently hit an auto rikshaw, and some persons got injured. I promptly reported it in to the near by police station. It took 3 days to get the FIR registered and get my car back. Since I was in hurry to reach my office (in another city), I wanted to leave Kochi as soon as possible. So I asked help of one of my friend, he was infact son of a topmost police officer in Kerala. He helped me by asking Circle Inspector to register my FIR as soon as possible (This officer neither helped me in wrong way nor took any money - he just asked the concerned officer to register the case as soon as possible. That's it). After this instruction, I got my FIR registered (Finally, In court I paid a fine of 3500Rs, so you can understand I never tried to falsify any of the violations I made). Before going out from the police station, one additional sub inspector of police asked me a bribe of 500Rs - you should understand the situation - I came there with a recommendation from one of topmost official of Kerala Police. He still asked me a bribe.

Now I feel ashamed - I shouldn't have paid this bribe - I should have informed this to that top official (he is one of the non-corrupted officer in police, I know). But in hurry, I paid.
