I had to pay a bribe to register a power of attorney
- Stamps and Registration
- Registration of House
- Paid INR 2,500
Me and my husband were buying a house on the outskirts of mumbai. but because we donot live in mumbai, we gave a power of attorney to my father ,which according to rules had to be "registered". to register the power of attorney, since we didnot pay a bribe , we were made to run from pillar to post by the officer there. he made us make silly changes in the wordings of the power of attorney(it was in flawless english), but this officer who was from UP and had clearly poor english skills made us " redraft the wordings as it had many mistakes". It was the height of a joke. eventually, after 3 days of running around , with my aged father in tow, we had to bukcle under pressure and had to pay him the above mentioned bribe. he wanted more money(10000 rupees), but "settled" for 2500 rupees, as we "used influence". we got another officer from another department to talk to this person, because of which our bribe money came down. This person's face, is now etched in our memories for the rest of our life. The sheer shamelessness, with which he acted shocks me to this day.
