Paid 500 to the Special Branch *******

Reported on March 12, 2012 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #2324

I applied for passport under the Passport ********** Kendra at Visakhapatnam on 3 rd November, 2011. According to procedure the police are supposed to come for verification within 3 weeks. However in my case it took about 11 weeks for the constable to turn up.
I waited for 2 months and went to the police commessioners office where the special branch police division is located to inquire. the staff gave me the cell number of the special branch constable in charge of verification in my residential area and asked me to call him and set up a time to visit my house.
I called the constable about 6-7 times over a period of 2 weeks and finally he agreed to come on 21 st Jan 2012. The first remarks he made when meeting me was " u live very far from the ********** and i had to come all this way just for u". that was his indirect method of informing me that he expects a bribe.
during the verification i informed him that this was a replacement passport in lieu of a lost passport. he demanded that i show the copy of FIR filed with the police. I told him that i submitted the original FIR copy at the passport office when applying, he demanded a xerox copy, though it was not necessary (since original FIR was already in their files). luckily i did take a xerox of the original and gave it to him.
(Its a common trick these Special Branch police play, asking for additional documents that they don't need or not required to take, just to confuse the applicant and then demand more bribe in case the applicant is unable to produce the paper they asked for.)
anyways, the verification was done and after leaving the house he then asked me directly to give him 500. I gave him 400 and after mumbling something, he left.
On Feb 8 th 2012, the police verification report was finally sent to the passport office.
