Pay what you want for address verification

Reported on March 4, 2011 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #27939

I was not called by the Police even after 40 days since submission of passport papers at the Passport Office. When I went to the police station and asked them why I was not called as soon as they got the papers, I was told there was too much work and when people want a passport they come anyway !

I sat there in the police station for 30 minutes looking at what was happening and 2 folks before me finished their paper work and was asked to "pay as much as you like". But, when one offered only Rs 100, he was asked to give more. He paid Rs 200 and went. The other bloke was worse off. He had a few issues with the dates apparently and that was "adjusted" by the constable there and he had to shell out Rs 600. When my turn came, I was again asked to pay "as much as I like", but going by the response to Rs 100 by the other guys, I sheepishly paid Rs 500(for multiple passports) in front of my kid :-( as I did not want to pick a fight with the cop in HIS station. I am not that courageous you know !

But, one thing was good, the guy who did the work - he was super efficient and knew what was needed and did everything in minutes. I just had to sign. Thank God for small mercies :-)
