Traffic police collecting bribe at Goregaon East Mumbai

Reported on December 31, 2012 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #178

Location: Restaurant Udupi Vihar crossroad, Goregaon East, Mumbai 400063
Who: a young traffic controller, spoke Marathi fluently, wears khaki dress with a cap, clean shaven. About 25 year old. Usually standing on south west corner of road, stands west side of restaurant udupi vihar on Aarey Road.

I had my phone in hand, not talking on speaker phone or using Bluetooth. I got a call which I rejected. The guy must have noticed the light blink in my hand while driving. He followed me, gave wrong information that Bluetooth is not allowed while driving, and said that I pay him Rs 300 to avoid confiscation of license, he said license was taken away, I have to go to chagrin road and pay a fine of Rs 1200. I don't know much about the laws of this bribery ridden country so I stopped at bank with this guy sitting in my car and gave him the money he asked for. I could not afford wasting days to get my license back. Why don't the idiotic motor dept officers make it easy for people to send the fine by post or direct deposit to a govt bank account? Corruption in India in every walk of life is disgusting.
