Activists slam government over food security
New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS) Activists Monday criticised the Narendra Modi government for not being serious in implementing the Food Security Act, 2013 in all the states.
"Food security was supposed to be implemented by July 5 in the entire country, but it has come to force only in five states," food rights activist Kavita Srivastava said here.
Designed by the previous Congress-led UPA government, the act aims at providing cheap food grains to 75 percent of the rural population and up to 50 percent of the urban population.
"No more changes are needed in the Food Security Act. There is an urgent need for its implementation across the country," she added.
However, the activists hailed India's stand to veto the Trade Facilitation Agreement at World Trade Organisation.
Besides, non-implementation of the Land Acquisition Act, pension scheme and problems related to job guarantee programmes were also discussed at the press conference.
