Gurugram, Nov 3 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an income tax (IT) officer posted in Gurugram for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 60,000 from a businessman-complainant, an official said on Friday.

The arrested officer, J.S. Gahlot, was posted in Ward No. 1 of Gurugram and was arrested under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

According to the complainant, during the assessment year 2010-11, there were transactions in his bank account worth over Rs 20 lakh, but he did not file the Income Tax Return (ITR) for the said period as he was claiming benefits under Section 44AF (Presumptive Income) of the Income Tax Act.

Subsequently, the case was transferred to Gurugram Ward No. 1 Income Tax officer (Gahlot), who demanded Rs 60,000 for closing the assessment and not imposing any penalties.

The CBI laid a trap and the accused was caught red-handed while accepting bribe.

Searches were also conducted at the residential premises of Gahlot in New Delhi which led to recovery of documents pertaining to various properties, investments and LIC policies, etc.

"The arrested accused was on Friday produced in the court of Special Judge, CBI cases, Panchkula," a CBI spokesperson said.
