Shillong, June 5 (IANS) A court in Meghalaya on Friday granted bail to former Bangladesh minister Salahuddin Ahmed, who was arrested here for trespassing into India, with three conditions that he should not leave the court's jurisdiction.

The bail was granted by court of additional deputy commissioner judicial B. Mawrie after Ahmed's wife Hasina furnished a bail bond of Rs.2 lakh.

"The court granted bail to Ahmed with three conditions that he should not leave jurisdiction of the court (the state capital of Meghalaya) besides he should report himself before the office of superintendent of police East Khasi Hills district and appear before the court," Ahmed's counsel S.P. Mahanta told IANS.

Moreover, the court also directed the arrested opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader to furnish his complete residential address to Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills district Mariahom Kharkrang.

Ahmed, the communications minister during the government of BNP leader Khaleda Zia from 2001-06, was arrested on May 11 after people alerted authorities about some suspicious movements by a man in an area here.

Police have registered a case against him under the Foreigners Act on charges of illegally entering India after he failed to produce his travel documents. He also did not have any papers to prove his identity and citizenship.

Ahmed has been admitted in various hospitals here after his arrest.

He is currently undergoing treatment at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences hospital here.

However, appearance of Ahmed, who went missing from Bangladesh since March 10 this year, in Shillong still remains a mystery as police or central intelligence agencies are yet to crack out as to how he landed in Shillong.

"We have not been able to crack the case how Ahmed landed in Shillong," a police officer said.
