Chandigarh, Sep 12 (IANS) The central government has given the nod to extend the tenure of Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora by three months, official sources said here on Wednesday.

Arora, a 1982-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was due to retire on September 30.

The Punjab government had approached the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to seek extension in the DGP's service. The extension was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Appointments on the recommendation of the Union Home Ministry.

Arora was appointed the DGP in 2015 by the then Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance government headed by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

When the Congress returned to power in Punjab in March 2017, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh retained Arora as the DGP.
