Kolkata, Sep 18 (IANS) West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi Thursday said he has asked state education minister as well as the home secretary to look into the police crackdown on students who were demonstrating against Jadavpur University Vice Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarty.

"I have asked the minister concerned and the home secretary to look into the matter and resolve the issue," Tripathi, who is ex-officio Jadavpur University chancellor, told media persons on the sidelines of a programme here.

Several students of the prestigious university had to be hospitalised after police allegedly beat them up early Wednesday for laying siege to Chakrabarty's office seeking a fresh inquiry into the purported sexual harassment of a female student on the campus last month.

The crackdown has been widely condemned with students and political parties demanding Chakrabarty's removal as the VC.

Both city Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purakayastha and Education Minister Partha Chatterjee has refuted claims the students were baton charged or assaulted.

Political parties, students and members of civil society have strongly condemned the police chief for his "blatant lies".
