I had shifted to Mumbai a few months ago and was working at a film…

Reported on March 23, 2014 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #40196

I had shifted to Mumbai a few months ago and was working at a film production company. It is very difficult and expensive to get a house in Mumbai in the first place for males and the police verification is a compulsory and difficult procedure.
I was staying with two of my friends (I had earlier taken the flat on my name) with the landlord's consent and shared their details with the DN Nagar police station at the time of shifting when the police verification happened.
Six months later, I got a call from the police station that the police did not receive the verification documents of my friends. I assured them I had done the needful.Their names and ID proofs were in the police documents and I was told that it would be enough. Suddenly they wanted more documents which they never asked for before.
I visited the station. The senior inspector, some Gaitonde or Shinde was the name, told me an FIR would be filed and the landlord would be called, a lot of legal procedures, this that. My landlord couldn't be reached that moment as he was out of town. I didn't want to lose the house. It had a costed me a huge amount to get it, lot of time and shifting cost and brokerage was involved and the landlord was cooperative and good to me. I was skeptical to let all of it go. The police man himself offered me a solution to pay Rs. 12500. He showed me some document. He told me but it would be without a receipt. This officer seemed like an educated guy. After 3 hours of negotiation and argument and hearing his useless views on Ranvir-Deepika's relationship and other bollywood gossip, he settled for 2500, because that was all I had at my house. I went back and got it. I was also instructed (morally taught rather) that I should submit the other documents asap.

Then started my regular trips to the police station with both my friends where everytime we were told how some document was missing by the station writers. After a month of this running around, my documents were complete finally (after a fierce argument which attracted the attention of everyone at the station) and everything was approved at one go. Then this female writer at the station asked me for a bribe. She told me that I paid so much to the senior cop and she also deserves a cut. I refused. She was shocked. She pleaded and even tried to harass me. I was clear this time and I was not carrying much cash and had a train to catch in a few hours. She told me to go back home and get it and then only she would clear the formalities. I refused. She told me 'Tum dilliwale idhar kaam karne, rehne kaayko aate ho? Abhi ruk, btati hu'. I stood my ground. She called some other senior cop. I told him that no documents are missing and what had been happening since a month. He said it's fine, cleared it and let me go. But no action against any authority was taken. Very shameful.
