Dint pay a bribe for traffic violation!
When I was going towards ********** theatre to ********** a friend, I looked up to confirm on the board that the road I was taking was indeed the one to ********** theatre. In betw the sinal changed from green to red as the traffic was also moving slowly. The cop stopped me & asked what I was doing look elsewhere while driving & driving on red. I told him although I'm from chennai but not too familiar with chennai since I lived in bangalore most of the time. But whatever the reason its was my mistake & I take responsibility & will pay the fine. This guy was trying to discourage me from paying the fine & asked & told me all sorts of things from "it'll take a very long time to go to mobile court", "the seargent is not available" to "my friend may be waiting" & "I maybe delayed". But I told him however long it takes & how much ever effort or money it is, I own up & want to pay the money. He dint know what to say or react but said, "This is new sir. Generally we've to talk in a different way to make the people accept their mistake & make them pay a fine. You are very different sir. You are telling by yourself that you made the mistake & you are responsible & wanting to pay the fine no matter what! You are very different sir. Please wait here". He went to the seargent & spoke & that guy came & very gruffily said "You have realised your error & taking resposibility. So what is the use of fining you? You may go sir"! I tried to convince him that it was nice of him to say that but I still wanna pay the fine. He refused to take any money. The point is not my willingness to pay the fine but I learnt an important lesson that day of being patient, responsible & willing to comply & co-operate at the same time know what I did wrong under what rule,law or section. just before that day I'd decided never to pay a bribe & start learning about know-how, know-why & know-what of these things. I've had other trysts with a TC, other traffic cops, Which I'll write about later.
