Diwali Bonus
I was on my way back home after college, on the new link road, Andheri west (near Cosmopolitian college). I've been driving for just 6 months so i still have the 'L' sticker on my car as a safety precaution. I had just crossed a signal when a traffic police officer stopped me. Since I had done nothing wrong I was confident that there was a mistake and I can sort it out.
I waited till the officer reached my car and politely asked him what was the issue.
He said I had jumped a signal. i was a little surprised considering 2 cars and a couple motorcycles passed through after me but the other officers made no effort to stop them.
i told him that there must have been some confusion because when I crossed the signal the light was still green! He told me to show my license, which I did immediately. He saw the details and gave me my license back. then told me to pay Rs. 200. As far as know the fine itself is 100 for 1st time offenders. I asked him for what was I paying for... to which he repeated that I jumped a signal. I politely reminded him that many vehicles passed after I did and nobody stopped them, also that since I did not jump the signal, I shouldn't have to pay. He smiled at me and told me that Diwali is close and that I should think about him as well. I was shocked but still did not lose my cool since I did not feel the need to create and issue. I simply reminded him since I'm not at fault I shouldn't have to pay. He then tried to scare me by saying that if he submits my licence to the R.T.O. office then I'll have to pay a bigger fine. i stood my ground and told him I wouldn't pay a fine for something I hadn't done. He understood that he was not going to get any money out of me and told me I could go. I was so relieved that I forgot to note his name or any other details. I feel if I had just looked at his badge once I could have brought a corrupt officer to justice.
