Ignored Bribery Hints for a New Passport Police verification
This is 2001 when I was living in Noida, Sector 53. I had applied for the passport and after a few days/weeks a police man(UP police) in Civilian Clothes came for Verification. I think it was a question from him or casually during the conversation, I mentioned that my dad works for the Indian Intelligence(GOI). I thought this should be good enough for background verification apart from the usual documents, since I was myself 17 and a dependent.
After this, he mentioned to me & my mom "kutch chai/paani ka intezaam hain". I kind of got the hint & my mom maybe or maybe not. She said sure, I will make some tea :). Then he persisted for "chai/paani". We acted dumb and then he left. But I was very **********, it was my first encounter with corruption.
In the evening I mentioned this to my dad. He said lets wait for a few week and we will take it from there if he actually blocks my file. So, after a few weeks when we did not hear from the passport office, my dad either personally or sent someone to the Noida/Ghazibad office and talked to them. As expected it was blocked, but they immediately cleared my file with no bribe.
#1. I definitely resisted on Stage1 on
a .) Principle.
b.) I was astonished that they would take bribe inspite of mentioning that my dad works for the Indian Intelligence.
#2. I am not sure, if I would have resisted for Stage2.
It's been 10 years since I have been in the US. Luckily, I have never paid a bribe and I hope I never have to ...
