While touring through Kerala some years ago on my motorbike which I had driven from the UK, I had the great misfortune to hit a fisherman and badly bruise his arm. The local Police were friendly, professional and helpful as we waited to hear from the hospital the state of the fellows injuries. When he was patched up I paid him 4000r as he would not be able to work for a few weeks and for the medical bill. I paid what he first asked for as it felt churlish to barter, and I felt, and still do feel, very remorseful for hitting a man when I was a guest in his country.
What really amazed me was the Police flatly refused to take the money I proffered them for their time and effort....this was a first for me in the whole trip, and I applaud them for their attitude and courteous nature. The officer was a true gentleman of the old school.
I do thing it is worth remembering that while many are on the take, there are others doing a honest and diligent job for their country......good luck with the rooting out of the bad apples. D.Price *******
