Police Verification done without bribe

Reported on March 25, 2011 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #33136

I applied for my passport and the usual police verification process was initiated. I was staying at Shikaripalya under Holimangala Police Station limits.
There was a routine check done at my house and with my neighbours and i got a summon from the police station. I had heard a lot about the normal bribing rates and how police delays/blocks the verification process if bribe is not given. Still i intentionally did not carry any money when i went to the police station.

The police officer asked for some documents, which i did not have with me at that time, so he asked me to get those. I was pretty sure he would also mention the bribe at this time, but he did not. I returned with the documents and he was satisfied. Just when i was about to leave, he said "Poeple usually give something"... I turned back and asked "how much?, cos i dont have anything with me..."
He said "usually 500 to 1000... but if you dont have rite now, its OK.. no problem...". I did not want to delay the verification process, so i specifically asked him... "if i do not give anything, will you delay the process? In that case i can go and withdraw something from the ATM"... Again to my surprise, he said... "No need... i will not delay it.. dont worry... i just said people usually give something, but its not legal and it should not be given, so i will not act differently even if someone does not give..."
I was still apprehensive, again to my utter surprise, within 3 days the status of my passport show "Police Verification Done" !!!

This incident taught me a lesson... There are still honest good people... But at the same time, if something is offered they find it hard to refuse...
