The developer of the property where I am buying a flat asked me to come for registration along with original PAN card and Rs. 3000 in cash. My impression was the amount was the processing fee. So, when my turn came for scanning my photo and fingerprint, I innocently asked where to pay the fee. I got ********** looks from everyone around which left me perplexed. After the process was completed, I was asked by the person whom I had mistaken to be the developer's employee (as the developer's office had asked me to contact him) but actually turned out to be a 'fixer', to cough out the Rs. 3000. I confidently asked for a receipt at which point he (and some others within earshot) started sniggering. Only then did I realise that this was a bribe I had paid and not an official fee! The Thane property sub-registrar's office is a cesspit of corruption and the entire operation works so smoothly; it has to be seen to be believed!
