I was with my wife on a two wheeler. It so happened that while I was crossing the junction, by the time I reached the mid point, it turned RED. I was confused whether to back or move ahead. I chose to move ahead. Now, the registration of this two wheeler was an out of state registration. When I crossed the signal , I was signalled by the traffic police standing beside the road to stop. Since I was with my wife and the registration of the vehicle was of different state, I changed my lane and moved ahead.I did not have NOC of the vehicle as my wife changed states in urgency.
Later, at about 1 km ahead, two cops on bullet stopped us. They said that I broke a red light. I made them understand that I didnot. I was in middle of the road when the signal changed. He later saw the other state registration number and asked me for papers. I showed the PUC, RC, DL , Tax Reciepts but I did not have NOC. They started talking to each other and started to frame MVA charges on me including rash driving. I argued. They said the total fine comes to Rs3000. I was not having that amount of money with me. I requested them to just fine me for red light and let me go but then they sternly said they will take away my vehicle. They demanded Rs 1000, then reduced it to 800 , then to 600 and finally they settled at 500. They did not give me any receipt. I felt cheapness inside of me. I always stood against bribery and here I am standing shamelessly just giving up a bribe. Why does Traffic cops harass us this way? Why aren't we fined just for the violation?
