When my daughter was born in July 2000,the hospital sent our details with wrong spelling of my wife and I to the Panchayat. We got the birth certificate with the wrong spelling of our names. We went to the Panchayat office several times and the officer was very rude. He did not even want to talk to us. He was 'busy' most of the time or not even there sometimes. We tried in vain for a year. We became desperate when we needed to apply for a passport for my daughter. I gave in and was forced to give a bribe. We got the amended birth certificate in 2 weeks.
