Met an accident, hospitalized and paid 2000
- Police
- Filing FIR
- Paid INR 2,000
It was early morning 4 o'clock when I was returning with a friend from Viman Nagar to Aundh, where I used to live. After covering 25km odd smoothly, just 50m away from my apartment, my bike was badly hit by a car coming from behind. My friend broke his ankle and got fractured at 3 points. After 5 minutes, ambulance came along with police, we got admitted, treated. Next day my friend was shifted to specialised hospital for a month and I was curing head injuries with 7 stitches at home. One day police called up saying they have saved us from Drunk and Drive case and you have to report to us at police station at the earliest. As I was riding a bike, I went there and was told that instead of drunk and drive case, police have registered rash driving case against me (even though I was hit from behind). Only technical fault of mine was, there was alcohol in my blood which probably crossed the allowed limit. So I was left with nothing to put my case strongly and had to pay 2000 in addition to the legal fine of Rs 500 for rash driving. I was told that I was saved from 2 cases - a. Drunk and Drive, b. Being responsible for accident causing pillion rider a serious injury. I was literally looted as I was unaware of laws and was frightened of suspension of license and court visits. The fact I observed recently was, the fine for drunk and drive (legal, with receipt) in Mumbai is something Rs 2000 for the first timer 4 wheeler driver. One day you have report to the hon. court and you are relieved if you have not made any major mistake and have sound background.
So if one wants to avoid giving bribes then firstly he must act in legal frame and be aware of all the rights and responsibilities. *******
