Paid Rs.600 bribe for Police Verification of Passport Renewal

Reported on July 4, 2014 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #41838

I had applied for renewal of mine and my mother's passports that were expired. As opposed to the procedure that the police need to come to my house and check if I am a resident of that address, I got a call from Peenya Police Station on 29th June (Sunday) to get my documents to the police station. The person who called me did not introduce himself on the phone and he was very rude. (I could not understand why this was asked since I had produced all the originals with one photo copy of each document at the Passport Seva Kendra). Even then I went with my documents to the police station. He asked me a list of documents that weren't actually needed and to get a photocopy of each. I went with the documents to him. He handed me two letters to get the signature of my neighbours and bring it to the police station on Monday(30th June). I called him again in the evening of 29th to clarify a few doubts and I specifically asked his name for which he said his name was Puttaraju (I later found out that he was not who he claimed to be. His name was Narayana).

I'd also like to mention that the address I gave for my new passport was the same as the one in the old passport.

30th June
Time: 11:30 AM
I went with the documents he asked me to get along with photocopies of each. He acted like he verified the documents by highlighting my name in each document. Everything was correct in my documents. So he started checking my mother's documents which were also correct. He made us go to the xerox centre which is diagonally opposite to the police station and get TWENTY COPIES OF POLICE VERIFICATION REPORT FORM AND THE FORM HE GAVE ME TO GET SIGNATURES OF MY NEIGHBOURS! At this point I protested saying that it was his duty to come to my residence and verify everything and that he was doing all this to trouble us. He started shouting and threatened that he will give a false report if I did not get the forms photocopied. I had to run to the xerox centre and get the things he asked since it was almost lunch time.

Ten minutes later, I got the things he asked for. He accepted it and asked me to PAY WHATEVER I CAN AND LEAVE. As courtesy I offered him Rs. 300 (150 each for mine and my mother's passports) but he said that he had to pay to the office boy and his higher authorities too. So he asked me to pay Rs.600 bribe and come back at 5 PM the same day for interrogation by the Sub-Inspector of Police! I had to go to the Police Station again that evening.
I had to go to the police station thrice to get the police verification done even though it was the duty of the police to come to my residence and verify.

This was a horrible experience; one that I would not like anyone else to experience. I sincerely hope that my LONG(sorry I had to vent my anger!) letter reaches the concerned authorities and necessary action is taken to bring the corrupt officers in Peenya Police station to justice.
