Passport Address Verification Bribe to Police

Reported on September 6, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #30847

I don't know what other people call to the money given when some work gets done in public department. May be money is given as a gift or a gesture to say thank you for getting the work done.

I had a police address verification pending for Passport, although its the duty of police to come to your home and verify the address details, but it seems the Bangalore HAL police station persons are lazy. So they called me up to bring all the documents for address verification (which I had already submitted while applying for passport). Since this is one of the most important documents for any person, I agreed to come to Police Station with all verification documents.

I reached HAL Police station and called up the lady police officer who initially asked me to come, she told the exact location where she was sitting. I reached there and was greeted with a smile and was given the official papers to be filled.

After all the verification, when I was about to leave, I said thank you to the lady for completing the task, but as soon as I stood up there came a non-verbal sign demanding something for the herculian task she did for me. I asked her how much she wants and she told anything will do........ I checked my wallet but there was only Rs 500 note, so I told her that Rs 500 is what I got but I cannot give all this as this would be too much.... Then she reached her drawer and took out Rs 200 which was available and returned me .....

So I paid Rs 300, to ensure that my address verification does not have any problems.
