Police reluctant to fine but ready to take bribe

I jumped a very busy signal on my bike, with slow moving traffic and big lorry in front blocking my line of vision to the signal. I was following this big vehicle unaware that the signal has chnaged ot red. SO were many bikers.Since I was close to the road a ppolice man promptly jumped and caught me while others manged to veer away I stopped. After spending long time trying to convince him that I couldn't see the signal, I gave up and told him to fine me and give me a reciept. I've seen some policemen giving fine chalans from their blackberry. This guy made lot of excuses for not giving me a fine chalan. An auto rickshaw driver who was watching this told me to give him something and leave. I did the same as I was getting late to work. I'm not in favor of bribing anybody. I'd rather pay the fine acc. to the rules and move on. I now regret I should've stood my ground. If it was not for my boss who'll yell at me if I go late, I wouldn't have done that.
