Police Verification can be renamed Police Bribery

Reported on March 12, 2011 from Pune , Maharashtra  ι Report #26587

I applied for a new passport under tatkal as my old one was damaged. Had submitted all required documents, so soon got hte new passport by post.

Then few weeks later I got a call from the nearby police station for the verification. My next flight abroad was next week, so without objecting I went to the station. The police had not visited my house at all, so I very well knew they just wanted some money. Infact, when I rented a house in Mundhwa, I registered in the same station as tenant.

The guy at the station pretended to look through my documents for a few minutes, and then came to the point. He plainly asked for Rs. 400. I very well knew, I need not pay anything -- I already have my new passport + visa with me! But since I was moving abroad, I had begun vacating my Pune house. The risk was high, as if the policeman created an issue, then not only will I not be able to travel, but also have to start looking for a new rented house in Pune!

I bargained and paid a bribe of Rs. 200. I wish I didnt pay this but the risks are too high for me.
