I applied for a new passport for my father. We were visited by the verification officer at our home on 24 Aug, 2014 at 7:00PM. He first verified the documents, asked for a copy of the identity proof and the address proof and then asked to sign a few documents.
After going through all the procedure, he asked for some 'kharcha-pani' for mithai and petrol. He argued that he has to serve many others who will verify our file. First my father gave him Rs. 300, which he very non-chalantly declined saying,
"Ye '30' rupaye mein kya hoga bhaisaab. Kum se kum 100 to do".
My father folded his hands and said, "itna to main nahi de sakta, aap chaho to ye 500 le lo. Isse zyada main nahi de sakta".
After a few minutes of haggling, he accepted the money and said, "Baki sab jagah se 1000 liye hain maine. Aap itna request kar rahe ho to 500 le leta hu."
He took the money and left.
Officer's name was B. S. Yadav (written on his badge) and he was in U.P. Police uniform. He was visiting from Indirapuram Police Station as our residence falls under that jurisdiction.
