Details:	My car was parked next to my house when a transport tempo driver hit front left bumper while reversing. We caught him red handed and he had to accept his mistake. But, he wouldn't part with the compensation demanded by us as none of us wanted to deal with the police. Finally, we decided to take him to the Jeevanbheema Nagar Traffic Police station. I was expecting very rude and unfriendly behavior from the cops. But, I was surprised to see a "Welcome" sign on the front gate. We were attended promptly by one of the officers and he checked the damage caused to both vehicles and noted down the details. I was expecting the next step to involve a demand for bribe i.e. registering FIR. To my surprise, they just carried on with the process. They also advised us to get a repair estimate from a reputed garage nearby before filing a case as the accused could get away with just a fine and the whole process could get delayed by 2-3 days. So, we went to couple of garages and got estimates from them. The estimate was less than what we had demanded as compensation. But, we didn't mind as long as the accused paid it. Luckily, the accused realized the futility and additional loss of time if we filed a case (since the cops seem to be cooperating with us). So, he paid up the estimated repair amount and thus we arrived at a compromise. It's upto you to judge if we did the right thing or not and whether the cops were right in advising us to compromise instead of chasing courts. But, I felt better that they didn't demand a bribe or act rudely or made it difficult for us. Looks like IPAB has made an impact on the Traffic Police Department :)

Details:	This is not a recent story...about 4 years old. Not many people know that for getting a driving license in Ahmedabad one can even go to the Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) office. Contact Details are at: http://www.wiaaindia.com/ahmedabad.html Here, I gave my learning license computer test in a clean air-conditioned testing room after which immediately the license was issued. Also, for the driving license test they took the test and gave me a ready final set of all the necessary paperwork. All this without any queueing up. Thus, I only went to the RTO (Regional Transport Office) once to********** the paperwork, which was all set hence did not require to stand in the queue for more than 10 minutes for photo taking and signature. Thereafter, 5 minutes later I had my license smart card with me. Never saw a Government body functioning so efficiently and that too without paying a single rupee as bribe. Hope to see such efficiency at other places too. So, I feel one of the reasons for paying a bribe is ignorance of other options.

Details:	I came from USA to India. I was worried about the customs clearance, as I have heard from many that custom officials at Mumbai airport take bribe for custom clearance. But I was fortunate enough that the officer on duty was honest and he was scanning all bags legally and was allowing who are bringing legal and permissible amount stuff. It was great experience.

I found few other fellows with non karnataka vehicles asked to visit the office and pay tax. God knows whether they pay tax or bribe to get out of there. Why there is no option to pay tax online?

Details:	I fitted LPG Gas conversion Kit into my Alto Car. After fitting the kit, workshop owner gave me all required documents for RTO endoresement for Jayanagar RTO. I took my car for endorsement to RTO office - after RTO superintendent verified all documents, paid the fees and then went to RTO inspector for Vehicle inspection. - While doing inspection, I was asked to get the LPG tank's serial number on a sheet printed(using pencil). Workshop owner helped me to get the same. Then RTO inspector on 29-Dec-2011, approved the LPG conversion request. I DIDN"T HAVE TO PAY *******

I had no need for paying any bribe for police verification. The honest officer made sincere enquiries, took the necessary documents and completed the formalities in no time.

Details:	over the last 65 years the officials have created such a labyrinth of rules and regulations that even they cant figure out how to navigate it. I have personally experienced the senior most officers becoming victims of this maze.I have witnessed a 3 year battle to decipher the exact meaning of the word"reimburse" involving countless law ministry opinions and several ministers opinions. The issue remained unresolved while crores of rupee payments were hanging fire!!.We are obsessed with the "letter of the law" wheras the guiding principle should be "spirit of the law" i once landed up at adelaide with 6 bottles of whiskey . whereasthe rules stated i could carry only 2.when the customs lady asked me why i had declared 6 when i was permitted only 2, i just answered :- 1. i got them very cheap in singapore and got greedy. 2. had no idea i was permitted only 2 but was made aware of the rule only i hour before landing when a customs form was distributed. 3. couldnt do anything about it so i declared the truth in the form. 4. please confiscate the extra bottles as i dont want to break your rules "welcome to australia " replied the customs lady. I was allowed to walk through with the 6 bottles!! Being an indian and not having experienced this kind of Strange behaviour i was pleasantly surprised.Later on i realised that the she just went by the spirit of the law. The law was made to prevent smuggling of duty free goods.she made a judgement that i was not a smuggler so allowed me in irrespective of the letter of the law. This kind of behaviour by a person in authority has an uplifting effect

Details:	Dear Mr ******* , Today(7 dec 2012) I went to RTO (Andheri) for applying of driving licenc for my son . First filling of form 4 . it takes only 1 minuite . take signature of Office in charge who sits in Block A . few seconds . paid fee Rs 350 for 2/4 wheeler .5 minuits . driving Test : the office asked my son to take a round of the ground by 2 wheeler & 4 wheeler. about 10 minuits . again go to officer for signature -- 1 min . submit the form on the window in block A . all this procedure took about 30 minuits including waiting time . I was astonished a the speed & also attitude of the officers . The mistake we common people make is that we assume that there will be harrasment & we have to pay money In some cases it may be true but if one insists on not paying bribe , they have to do your work . In fact at this particular office of RTO (Andheri) mumbai , I have experienced that If you go yourself (without agent) your work is done faster than if you o through agent .
