Cost of not paying Bribe
In May 2010 my daughter came to India from Singapore for the delivery of her baby. She got a son in July 2010 in Mumbai. We tried to apply for his Passport in Mumbai passport office what could not even apply for the passport since both the parents were holding New Delhi address passport.
Since she was to go back in September we reached to apply for his passport under Tatkal scheme. We could apply it after four visits to passport office. We received it in second week of September and she left for her marital home with both her children. After nearly two months in November an officer came to our home for verification.
I showed him all the relevant documents of my daughter like voter ID card, Bank account statement and Ration Card since she was the applicant of infant's passport. Gentleman left with his own version of verification and reported misinformation. There was a letter from passport office for explanation to why they should not revoke the passport of the baby. This was since I did not pay him bribe when he came for verification.
My daughter and son-in-law wrote it to Indian Embassy in Singapore and had their letter endorsed and sent to Delhi passport office. Still she had to come to India for verification of her son's passport now 7 month's old. She went to passport office any deposited his passport and applied for re verification. This was the time I realized its not passport office but verification agency who misinterpret the verification and to avoid this and save time people pay bribe.
Same gentleman was approached by my daughter in his office in Model Town who was sitting on verification papers for one week. He was such a liar he told my daughter that I said told him at the time of verification that my daughter lived at her in-laws place. I just could not do a thing about his such a lie when all her genuine valid document are with me and I went to passport office to apply for the passport why will I say that. He was impossible and argued that she should live at her in-laws place after marriage. I was shocked to hear his statement when her marital family has no problem why should he be objecting to her stay at her parent's place.
Anyway this time I called three of my neighbors to sign for my statement. We got passport in 10 days period. And it cost my daughter a visit from Singapore with both her children and over one month.
Not everyone can afford this cost of not paying *******
