Give something for us at the signal!

Reported on May 27, 2013 from Chennai , Tamil Nadu  ι Report #34575

While driving in the city, I was passing a signal (where I had the right of way) while a traffic police officer took an illegal U-turn almost hitting into me. I honked hard to warn him and this hurt his ego - how dare I stop a police officer from doing as he pleases! His supervisor, manning that very signal witnesses all this and knows I am not at fault.

This officer meanwhile chases and flags me down and demands Rs.1500 as fine for jumping a red signal. I tell him that it wasn't me who jumped the signal, rather it was his mistake. He threatens to confiscate my papers when I ask him for two things - proof that I jumped a red signal and a receipt for the fine which I would pay if am proven wrong.

He takes me to the same senior officer at the junction (since he did not have a receipt book) and repeats his demand for Rs.1500. I tell the Sr. officer that I am innocent and if proven wrong, will pay the fine against a receipt. Then follows an interrogation session where I am asked how much I earn, if my wife (who was waiting in the car all through this charade) was working, how much rent I pay, etc. Then comes the clincher from the police officer - "When you earn so much and pay so much rent, am sure you can part with a few of it for us at the signal!!"

I flatly refused to oblige saying, I will not pay just like that. Prove me guilty, quote the correct fine as per rule and I shall pay against a receipt. The officer finally said he has noted my car number and will send me a court notice. With that I was on my way and till date am yet to receive one :)
