We did not pay a bribe though it was demanded.
It happened about a year back. My daughter had come in form Mumbai where she lives and works as TV anchor and fashion celebrity. We were on our way to a function in a 5 star hotel where she was the "show stopper."
We were on time and in no hurry when our chauffeur was stopped by a traffic constable for red light violation.. In fact it was not a violation as we had passed the point of no return behind a large bus and the distance to be covered doing a right turn was enough for the light to change after we had passed the signal point. Obviously we had not seen it changing behind us.. as the bus hid the lights from us in the process of negotiating the traffic.
The constable was aware that we were not breaking any law but tried to frighten the chauffeur and asked him to bring his licence etc. All documents were in order but the man demanded we Pay a fine. On asking where the sub inslector with the receipt book was we found that there was no answer forthcoming just a repeat request to pay the fine...with threatening gestures to the chauffeur who was a North Indian and did not speak the local Tamil.
When we refused... my daughter was vehement and made us stop the car in the middle of traffic and refused to move until the subj inspector produced his receipt book, the unstable relented and went off to chase another innocent who had crossed properly but being one of the last... The fact that several buses passed us after the policeman stopped us was completely ignored on both instances. Us and the new prey.
This happened at the intersection of Kotturpuram Road and Main Road to Adyar. IIT etc.
